International Conference on Computational Vision and Robotics

Computer Vision and Robotic, held in Bhubaneswar, India, is one of the most challenging areas of 21st century technology. Applications range from humanoid to “man-less”plant, deep-sea applications to space applications, agriculture to medicine, household goods to manufacturing.

Soft Robotics: Second EUCogIII Members Conference
European Network for the Advancement of Artificial Cognitive Systems, Interaction and Robotics

The focus of this members meeting will be on research in “soft robotics”. The term is used collectively for a new generation of robots that capitalize on “soft” designs at various levels - such as movement mechanisms (muscles, tendons), materials, surfaces (skin) - with the aim to achieve some of the flexibility and robustness of biological organisms as well as to improve social/emotional interaction with humans.

The topic will be introduced with a general overview of soft robotics research by Prof Rolf Pfeifer, followed by 4-5 talks on specific topics by other speakers.

EUCog is a European network for researchers in artificial cognitive systems and related areas who want to connect to other researchers and reflect on the challenges and aims of the discipline. The network funds meetings, workshops, members’ participation in academic events, faculty exchanges and other activities that further its aims. It is funded by the Information and Communication Technologies division of the European Commission, Cognitive Systems and Robotics unit, under the 7th Research Framework Program. -

You are invited to become a member of the network if you are doing research in a relevant area.

We will proceed as follows:

  • First, we will look at traditional Artificial Intelligence (AI), which followed a largely disembodied approach. We will identify its successes and also its problems to set ground for the rest of the tutorial which focuses on embodied AI or embodied cognitive science.
  • Second, with the help of numerous robot and animal case studies, we will illustrate how embodiment can be exploited for locomotion and for grasping.
  •  
  • Third, we will move from the direct physical implications of embodiment to the impact it has on informational processes in an organism. The information that reaches the brain is very much shaped by the agent’s morphology and by its sensory-motor interaction with the environment.
  •  
  • Fourth and last, we will illustrate that embodiment plays a constitutive role in cognition and we will also argue for a developmental perspective on cognition.


As we proceed, we will embed the diverse case studies into a theoretical scheme and we will also employ this scheme in exercises.
