SoftBank Robotics Corporation
Tokyo, Minato-ku 105-7309 Japan
SoftBank Corp. is a Japanese telecommunications and Internet corporation, with operations in broadband, fixed-line telecommunications, e-commerce, Internet, broadmedia, technology services, finance, media and marketing, and other businesses.
SoftBank’s robotics division is known for the Pepper humanoid robot, which learns as you talk to him via voice-recognition and voice-feedback software. SoftBank predicts that Pepper will enhance our lives in the same way that the Internet, computers and mobile did. Pepper uses cloud computing to learn about its surroundings and sends the interaction mechanics to remote servers.
SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son successfully established the SoftBank-Aldebaran Robotics-Foxcomm Technologies triumvirate that is pushing the mass-produced, “empathetic” Pepper humanoid onto the world stage. SoftBank, which acquired France-based Aldebaran in 2012, has been rolling out Pepper at its stores and those of other customers in Europe and Asia. For several months, 1,000 units of Pepper sold out in minutes each month, making it one of the most successful customer-service robots so far. SoftBank and its commercial partners have set their sights on the U.S. market.
