Universal Robots A/S

Universal Robots A/S develops industrial robots that automate and streamline repetitive industrial processes. Their robots are lightweight and have the flexibility to move around seamlessly in production facilities.

Universal Robots is a first mover within a new segment of collaborative industrial robots focusing on user-friendliness and flexibility for the SMB market. The company is headquartered in Odense, Denmark, where all development and production is carried out. The company was purchased by Teradyne Inc. in 2015 for $285 million.

The company’s robots are most commonly used for pick and place, injection molding, CNC, packaging and palletizing, quality inspection, assembly, machine tending, lab analysis and testing, and gluing and welding applications.

Universal Robots serves a range of industries including automotive and subcontractors, food and tobacco production, furniture and equipment, metal and machining, plastic and polymers, pharma and chemistry, and scientific and research industries.

The company produces a robotic arm that is extremely flexible and easy to use in daily production. Its product portfolio includes the collaborative UR3, UR5, and UR10 robot arms, named after their payloads in kilos.

After initial risk assessment, the collaborative Universal Robots can operate alongside human operators without safety guarding. If a UR robot comes into contact with an employee, the built-in force control limits the forces at contact, adhering to the current safety requirements on force and torque limitations.

The collaborative robots can quickly be moved around production sites and are easily integrated in all industries — from the small machine shop to the large auto assembly line.
