Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. In the United States, for example, heart disease accounts for 1 in every 4 deaths. In Europe, heart disease accounts for 45 percent of all deaths.
Now scientists at the London Institute of Medical Services have created artificial intelligence (AI) that can predict when patients with a heart disorder will die. That information, according to the scientists, could help future patients get better treatment.
The AI analyzed blood tests and 3D heart models of 256 patients diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, a type of high blood pressure which impacts the lungs and can cause dizziness, fainting, and shortness of breath.
The AI predicted with 80 percent accuracy which patients would die in the next year. The average doctor’s accuracy is about 60 percent.
The AI measured the movement of 30,000 different points in the heart during each a heartbeat. When this data was combined with eight years of patient health records, the AI learned which abnormalities predicted when patients would die. The scientists say the AI can look about five years into the future.
“The AI really allows you to tailor the individual treatment,” Dr. Declan O’Regan, one on the researchers, told BBC News. “So it takes the results of dozens of different tests including imaging, to predict what’s going to happen to individual patients very accurately. So we can tailor getting absolutely the right intensive treatment to those who will benefit the most.”
The researchers want to use this AI with other forms of heart failure, such as cardiomyopathy, to see who might need a pacemaker or other forms of treatment.
