Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has introduced the Mi Robot Vacuum, a $250 cleaning robot that resembles and challenges the iRobot Roomba. And Xiaomi is taking the same approach to the Mi Robot Vacuum as its does with its smartphones: high-end specifications at an affordable price.

The Mi Robot Vacuum can clean all floor types and features Laser Distance Sensor (LDS) and Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) to scan its surroundings 1,800 times per second in 360 degrees. It also has 12 sensors, including ultrasonic radar, cliff sensor, gyroscope and accelerometer, three processors and four CPU cores for real-time mapping and positioning, and a main brush with adjustable height for uneven surfaces.

Must-See: Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum

The Mi Robot Vacuum, which will go on sale in China starting September 6, features a Nidec brushless DC motor, claims to be ultra quiet, and uses a 5,200 mAh battery that promises 2.5 hours of cleaning.

The Mi Robot Vacuum also claims to have more suction power (1,800 Pa) than the Roomba 980 (1,670 Pa).

A companion app lets you check the status of the Mi Robot Vacuum, remotely toggle it, switch between three cleaning modes (normal, quiet and active) and set schedules for automatic cleaning.

“The technology to calculate the best cleaning path is a breakthrough in the domestic market, and that can compete with international robot vacuum cleaner makers,” said Xiaomi co-founder and vice president Liu De.

When its battery is running low, the Mi Robot Vacuum will go to its docking station, recharge itself, and then return to the last cleaning location.

Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum

At first glance, the Mi Robot Vacuum stacks up real well, maybe better, than some other top robot vacuums. It claims to have a longer battery life than the pricier Roomba 980, Roomba 960, and Dyson 360 Eye. It also has more suction than both Roombas, and is much cheaper than all three models compared below. Unfortunately, like most Xiaomi products, the Mi Robot Vacuum probably won’t be available in the US anytime soon.
