AutoStore micro-fulfillment locates grocery fulfillment centers close to customers.

Description:
During 2020, AutoStore rolled out micro-fulfillment centers (MFC) to enable grocery e-commerce fulfillment workflow. The AutoStore MFC solution fits in the space between large-scale but remote automated warehouses and labor-intensive, in-store fulfillment. AutoStore MFCs enable retailers to have more efficient order fulfillment through both in-store pickup and rapid home delivery to customers.

Analysis:
Full blown automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) have emerged as one of the key solutions for warehouse fulfillment. Historically, cube-based ASRS systems, like those delivered by AutoStore, required a huge investment in time and money, along with a large allocation of warehouse floorspace. The innovation of a “micro-fulfillment” center is in the space optimization of smaller footprint ASRS designs. AutoStore leveraged its core knowledge and expertise in ASRS design to produce a high-density storage solution that can be deployed effectively into a smaller footprint. An AutoStore MFC can be configured to fit in a grocery store back storeroom or even in a section of the front-of-house retail space to provide a new shopping experience. The solution is easily expandable to accommodate future growth. Finally, unlike in-store fulfillment options for curbside or home delivery, AutoStore MFC provides complete inventory control to minimize the opportunity for stockouts, a common problem for in-store fulfillment. – Mike Oitzman
