In just five years, AutoX launched its public robotaxi service, showing the rate at which innovation is happening in the space.

Description:
AutoX, a Chinese autonomous vehicle pioneer, opened its Level 4 driverless robotaxi service to the public in Shenzhen, China in January 2021. This is the first time the general public in China can pay for a robotaxi that doesn’t have a safety driver. The modified Fiat Chrysler Pacifica minivans use a variety of sensing modalities, including cameras, LiDAR, radar, IMUs and GPS. Shenzhen has the highest level of population density of any city in China. To start, AutoX’s fleet of 25 Pacifica minivans will operate within Shenzhen’s Pingshan district, which is 65 square miles in size. AutoX’s vehicles have teleoperators standing by in case the systems encounter situations they can’t handle. AutoX is also testing a robotaxi service in Shanghai, but it currently uses safety drivers.

Analysis:
AutoX became the second company in the world to launch a Level 4 robotaxi service to the public without safety drivers. Fellow RBR50 company Waymo was the first to do so, opening its robotaxi service to the public in Chandler, Arizona in late 2020. In just five years, AutoX launched its public robotaxi service, showing the rate at which innovation is happening in the space. The company is the first to obtain permits in four mega cities in China and the second to obtain a driverless robotaxi permit in California, although it has yet to utilize it. There is tremendous activity taking place within China’s autonomous vehicle industry, but none more impressive than what AutoX has accomplished. – Steve Crowe
