RE2’s O-AMPP robotic system is capable of both autonomously delivering and installing photovoltaic (PV) modules.

Description:
RE2 Robotics is being recognized as a leader with the development of a robotic solution for autonomous deployment of solar fields. The Outdoor Autonomous Manipulation of Photovoltaic Panels (O-AMPP) robotic system is capable of both autonomously delivering and installing photovoltaic (PV) modules.

The O-AMPP base unit consists of the RE2 Sapien robotic manipulator fixed to the top of a large unmanned ground vehicle (UGV). This platform is capable of maneuvering in the tight spaces between PV arrays to deliver a new set of PV panels to the installation site. Using computer vision, the system registers the target installation location and uses the Sapien arm to lift a PV panel and install it into the array.

Analysis:
RE2 combines a variety of state-of-the-art technologies to help increase the productivity of solar panel installers. Commercial PV installations are growing at a record rate, and the market is currently understaff ed with installers to meet the demand for green power. A solar plant can require the installation of hundreds of thousands of panels.

RE2 solves this market need with a completely automated PV panel installation solution. No other autonomous solution exists in the market.

O-AMPP acts as an assistive device, taking on the intensive task of picking and placing PV panels, while workers carry out fi ner tasks such as wiring, laying cable runs, and validating plant performance. RR – Mike Oitzman
