3M’s Finesse-It Robotic Paint Repair System automates the identification and repair of painting defects that occur during automotive manufacturing, eliminating the need to have a team manually identify and repair finishing imperfections on vehicles. The 3M system utilizes an advanced vision system to detect topcoat flaws, imperfections and blemishes. A articulated robotic arm then controls 3M orbital sanders and other 3M products (pads, discs, polishes etc.) to repair the imperfections accurately, with high levels of quality and consistency 






Analysis

Every car that comes off the assembly line requires some level of sanding and polishing as part of the ‘finishing’ process. 3M’s Finesse-It Robotic Paint Repair System automates this costly and manpower intensive process. There are not many systems like it, and none that are as precise as the 3M’s solution, despite the fact that nearly every car that comes off the assembly line requires some level of sanding and polishing
