Waymo is an autonomous car development company which started as Google’s self-driving car project. Waymo increased its autonomous driving in California by 50 percent in 2016.
Waymo develops hardware and software to make the self-driving car a reality.
The company describes itself as “a self-driving tech company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to move around.”
Rather than producing self-driving cars, they are focusing their efforts on developing the self-driving technology used for applications such as ride-sharing, transportation, trucking, logistics, and personal transportation.
Waymo has been working on “scalability.” The company’s efforts have lead to a decrease in the cost of the LIDAR sensor, which is typically the most costly item in a self-driving car solution.
They aim to improve transportation for people worldwide, building on software and sensor technology.
The company’s notable accomplishments include “the world’s first fully self-driving trip on public roads, in a car without a steering wheel or pedals”, one billion miles of simulation testing yearly, and their cars have autonomously driven over two million miles on public roads spanning four U.S. cities.
