Elite French counterterrorism team R.A.I.D. (Rechereche Assistance Intervention Dissuasion) announced that ReconRobotics‘ Recon Scout XT played an integral part in a mission that successfully killed Islamic extremist Mohamed Merah on March 22. Merah became a counterterrorism target after he shot three French soldiers in addition to three children and a rabbi at a Jewish elementary school in Toulouse.
The operation ended in a long standoff in which Merah had barricaded himself in his apartment and challenged police to enter.
After the suspect shot through his apartment door, the Scout XT was able to transmit the layout of the apartment to the team and identify that the subject was barricaded in the bathroom. At no point was the suspect aware of the presence of the robot.
The Recon Scout used in the mission was purchased in 2011 from ReconRobotics. The Paris SWAT team (BRI de Paris) also purchased a Scout XT in 2011. In addition the STSI2 acquisition and deployment management group adopted the ReconRobotics Scout kit solution for further propagation to local, regional, and national entities.Read More
